In our post World Record : STSPIN, the Smallest Single Chip Motor Driver, Still With Even More Features, we looked at the different types of electric motors (DC, BLDC and stepper) and their pros and cons for different applications. We also looked at a new range of STSPIN motor drivers optimized for driving low voltage motors that are typically used in battery powered equipment including toys, portable medical, IoT actuators and portable point-of-sales terminals. They are housed in a tiny 3mm x 3mm QFN package.
We also examined the STSPIN230, the device used for driving 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors, that have the advantage of being both lighter and more reliable than brushed DC motors thanks to the absence of brushes that eventually wear and need to be replaced. The X-NUCLEO-IHM11M1 is the STM32 Nucleo expansion board that is based on the STSPIN230.
