At the combined European MEMS & Sensors and Imaging Summits organized by SEMI in Grenoble (France), ST CEO Carlo Bozotti delivered a keynote speech on “the next wave of sensors.”
For consumer and automotive applications, he emphasized the critical role of pushing the envelope of sensor accuracy, which in turn requires more investment in sensor testing and calibration, as well as dedicated algorithms. For optical sensing, the move from simple picture acquisition with visible light to sensing and interpreting the environment using (visible and non-visible) light is pushing chipmakers to provide solutions across a larger light spectrum, embedding specific active illumination solutions and security.
Carlo Bozotti also highlighted the opportunities offered by “Smart Industry” applications, which is where ST sees the most promising growth potential for sensors in the future. For ST, it is the combination of microcontroller-powered multi-sensor systems, combined with artificial intelligence techniques, that will truly take advantage of the available physical data to optimize the industrial environment. This means the factories of today will be the factories of tomorrow, augmented. ST is already working on this next wave, as illustrated with the proof-of-concept architecture which will be presented tomorrow on Day 2 of the event.
