Indeed, it will be the seventh time we hold a NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day, and we decided to delve upon it on the blog because it represents a marvelous opportunity for ST to reach out to local actors. There will be technical presentations to help engineers get first-hand access to our people. Additionally, local companies and universities will have the opportunity to demonstrate their projects and a delegate from the Confindustria Campania will announce the three companies with the most exciting products to help shine a light even brighter on their potential.
Networking with Italian Industry and the World at the NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018
The Confindustria is the General Confederation of Italian Industry, and the Confindustria Campania is its chapter for the southern region of Campania. Its presence at our NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018 shows the event’s importance in the Italian industry, demonstrating our commitment to local entrepreneurship. Despite our global reach in the industry, ST multiplies local initiatives to make its technologies even more accessible. For instance, our partnership with TechShop in Station F, in Paris, France, or the development of our first accelerator program in collaboration with ESIEE Connect in that region brings our engineers and directors to startups. And we know that innovation comes from our local talents like we recently saw with the STYL, a device to practice pen spinning that came from students that took parts in the Founders Program at Station F.
The NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018 is a similar initiative that brings us closer to the Italian talents that will transform the industry. The talks are in Italian, the slides are in English, but the event is a chance for the best projects to reach the world. The impact on the region is in fact so crucial that Invitalia, a governmental organization promoting the country’s economic development, remains an active partner and will participate in the concluding remarks. Hence, the NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018 brings much more than ST technologies to entrepreneurs because we designed this event to help companies network with the industry and government partners that they would not meet otherwise. This emphasis on interpersonal connections is what sets this event apart because instead of being ST-centered, it is innovation-focused, thus giving everyone a chance to grow their business and careers.
Futuristic Innovations at the NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018
The demo floor at the NeaPolis Innovation Technology Day 2018 will best exemplify our desire to promote innovation rather than just our company. Last year was memorable because of the vast array of prototypes that the visitors got the experience. For instance, Impalab showed in 2017 a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) capable of recognizing the image that the user was staring at, thus opening the door to an entirely new way of interacting with our machines. Another project that caught everyone’s eye was a photovoltaic plant maintenance system from TopView that used drones. The aircraft hover over solar panels, and the user can see if they need repair. The promising project has the financial support of the European GNSS Agency as well as some highway building companies that could use a similar system to track the state of their infrastructure.
Universities are also very present during the event. For example, in 2017, the Campania University Luigi Vanvitelli showed a low-cost smart meter that could change how factories or even cities function. Although it is much more affordable than competing solutions, the acquisition system was precise, and a Graphical User Interface made the smart meter a lot more intuitive. There was also the University of Naples Federico II that showed a computer interface that relies on our WESU reference design. With just the movements of the arm, a user can control a computer, thus opening the door to new accessibility possibilities with minimal investments since the machine only needs a Bluetooth LE connection to receive the commands from the wearable. Beyond the classical approach to controlling Operating Systems, this technology could also become a new form of interaction for people suffering from a handicap.

In many cases, like the Stickntrack from Sensolus, new power devices can bring connectivity to a whole new class of non-powered assets to open the door to better operations and more efficient management.
